Matthew Maffei is a Brooklyn-based filmmaker whose work blends raw observation with bursts of surreal imagination. Drawing from a background in English Literature and Creative Writing, Matt approaches cinema as a way of capturing the textures of everyday life while uncovering the strange, poetic undercurrents that run beneath it.
His short films Mikey and Home Videos, along with a series of street-style improvisational projects shot after moving to New York, established his voice as a director attuned to both atmosphere and character. Now developing new projects like An Extraordinary Fish, Matt continues to craft intimate, ambitious stories that balance humor, melancholy, and the unexpected.
